William (Bill) Kent, 1936-2005


Memorial for Bill Kent

We are inviting the community to participate in a memorial for Bill Kent, owner of Petra Gallery and patron of the arts in Moab, beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2006, which would have been Bill’s 70th birthday.

The Taiko Drummers will begin the memorial at 3:30 pm. We will gather at Marianne’s Bakery for a chance to reminisce. Afterward we will share light refreshments, including birthday cake, and view Bill’s photos which will be on display at Petra Gallery.

We welcome anyone to share their memories of Bill and what was important in his life. We look forward to seeing all of you.

William Kent of Moab, Utah, formerly of Menlo Park, Calif., died on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, of a heart attack. He was 69.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1936, he came to New York City with his parents as an infant. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved to California in 1959, where he earned a master’s degree in mathematics from San Jose State University.

Bill worked for IBM as a computer programmer for 20 years before leaving to work at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories as a database designer. He was actively involved with professional organizations and delivered presentations at many international conferences, particularly Very Large Databases conferences. Bill retired in 2000 to pursue his dream of living in Moab, Utah.

Bill was a photographer and the author of the book “Data and Reality” and numerous technical papers and essays. He was a true lover of nature and was dedicated to environmental conservation, especially in the red rock country of Utah. As owner of the Petra Gallery in Moab, he was devoted to promoting the arts in that community.

He is survived by his children, Karen Rutel of Logan, Utah, Tikva Janetjoy Kohn of Monsey, N.Y., and David Kent of Gaithersburg, Md.; brother George Kent of Honolulu, Hawai’i; grandson Jason Rutel of Logan, Utah; and former wife Barbara Kent of Menlo Park, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be sent in his name to National Resources Defense Council (212-727-1773), Environmental Defense Fund or a similar environmental organization.
